Barry Parkin Quote:
Hi Spoke to my mother Jenny Parkin nee Fairley who told me that when her family migrated to Australia in 1927 they lived for a few weeks with their aunt and uncle in hawthornedene. Their aunt Bella Elliott was then already operating the small shed now known as Joans Pantry, she believed that it had been operating for 2 or 3 years prior to their arrival. After aunt Bella retired her daughter Mary and husband Jack Stoyel took over the shop. Jack built the little Arbour on the side and did a lot of gardening around the shop and surrounding area which a lot of the older personel of the district will remember. One of Mary Stoyels Daughters believes the shop was named (Joans pantry) by the next owner after her mother and she remembered it because her name was also Joan. Bella Elliot lived in the first house built in the Dene accross the bridge and I beleive it is still there today.
Keith Rodda Quote:
I can remember when Joan's was a shed, possibly corrugated iron, with a lift up flap on the side which revealed a counter from which ice cream and drinks were served. It was operated by a family called Elliott and they lived on the other side of what is now known as Apex Park and this area was used to play hockey. The date would be around 1935-1940.
