In the Guernsey census of 30th March 1851 William was described as an agricultural labourer living at Friquet, St Andrews. William and Mary Ann sailed for South Australia from Plymouth on 25th

The 'Fortune' was a Barque of 571 tons built by N. Burns in 1852 for Bains &Co. of Liverpool. It was built of Black Birch and Hackmatach and sheathed with yellow metal. She was legally able to carry 216 adults
exclusive of master, crew and cabin passengers. When she sailed from Plymouth in 1854 the master was T. J. McCarthy and she carried 84 English and 99 Irish adults, 23 English and 29 Irish children between 1 and 14, a total of 209 souls. On the passenger list, William and Mary Ann are describer as English, 20 years of age and married. The population of SA was 85,000 (census) 1854 was a drought year. Steam navigation on the Murray River began and the first government telegraph line opened from Adelaide to Port Adelaide.
William and Mary Ann settled at the Reedbeds for a time. (The Reedbeds was an area of marshy land between Port Adelaide and the mouth of the Torrens River). Subsequently, WILLIAM obtained work as an agricultural labourer for Elijah Broadbent at Cherry Gardens. He built a wattle hut by the creek that runs through the centre of section 788. Hnd. of Noarlunga about 100 metres south of Mahar Road on the Cherry Gardens property of Elijah Broadbent. (In 1979 it was still possible to see the small area that had been cut out of the hill on the west side of the creek for the bark hut). On the birth certificate of HENRY NICOLLE 1/12/1874 WILLIAM is listed as a Sawyer of Cherry Gardens. On 27th April 1876, WILLIAM obtained a 7 year lease, with a right to purchase of sections 695, 703, 704 and 714 in the hundred of Noarlunga from James Sheriff. (This land straddled Piggot Range Road, due east of
Sheriff Road, Reynella). During this period the Nicolle’s lived at Clarendon selling timber and vegetables from the Sheriff property. When the lease expired on the Sheriff property, WILLIAM did not take up
his option to purchase. Instead he purchased part of section 954 in the hundred of Kuitpo (Vol. xxxv11 Fol. 213) in Dashwoods Gully from John Simmons on April 25th, 1883. Here he built a cottage. (see photo)

NICOLLE.—On the 25th January, at his residence, at Kangarilla, William, the beloved husband of Mary Ann Nicolle, after a long and painful illness, aged 67 years, leaving a widow and 8 sons and 3 daughters, and 46 grandchildren to mourn their loss. For ever at rest.
